Understanding the Concept of Providing Music in the Workplace

A common quotation defines music as the universal language that transcends all boundaries. Music helps soothe our nerves and reduce stress levels. Moreover, it has held a place in the work setting throughout history like the weavers who sang while working during Victorian times and the radio stations in 1940 that operated a program twice a day which aimed to keep the factory workers' attention.

In modern times, several studies have been conducted and concluded that providing music in the workplace has a positive effect on the employees. Among these positive benefits are improved employee productivity and alertness, fewer accidents, and enhanced team interactions. Moreover, playing music in the workplace helps create a positive mood among your employees.

However, caution must be taken when considering the use of music in the workplace because, although some employees will gain positive results from music, there are also some who get distracted by it. Moreover, the type of music being played has to be considered and there are factors that will affect your choice, including the nature of your business, the kind of people in your workplace and the mood and style you want to exude in the office. Furthermore, experts in this undertaking suggest the use of instrumental music so that employees will not be distracted by singing the lyrics.

Alternatively, you can allow your employees to use headphones, specially those who want to hear music while they work. However, this rule will generally depend on your preference and the business you have. Although there is a theory that people listening to their own favourite music will be more productive, scientific studies have yet to be conducted.

As a final note, when you are considering incorporating music in the workplace, you must involve your employees in such a decision.

Testimonials

  • Jeremy Vine (BBC Radio 2) M&IT Awards
"Finger Mouse were brilliant - young, cool, and the most brilliant musicians. They made the joint rock! I hope to work with them again.”
  • Lindsey Brown Wedding Reception
"Dear Patrick, I just wanted to say thanks to you and to Lucinda (harpist) for all you did to make our wedding party so special. Lucinda was fantastic (if a little too good looking for a prima donna bride's tastes!!) and lots of guests commented on her performance and the wonderful atmosphere she created. You were equally professional and reassuring throughout the whole process, for which many thanks.”
  • Michael McCotter Private Party

"Kelly Dickson was excellent, the sound level and quality just right fitting in perfectly with the venue and atmosphere. Kelly made a big impression on the delegates... and and they were still talking about her days later!!”
